Returning to Reiki After a Break - A Gentle Way to Begin Again

2 min read

Perhaps you completed a Reiki course some time ago. You were curious, you enjoyed learning, and you intended to make space for regular practice.

Then life became busy. Your manual went onto a shelf. Days became months, and now you wonder how to return.

You can begin by revisiting what you learned, without asking yourself to remember everything immediately. Returning to Reiki after a break can start with a little time, a few honest questions and guidance where you need it.

Reconnect with your original reason for learning

Think back to what first interested you in Reiki.

Was it the opportunity to explore a personal practice? The principles? The experience of learning with others? A wish to bring more attention to your own wellbeing?

Your reason may be different now, and that is all right. Understanding what you want from Reiki today can help you decide how to move forward.

You do not need to recreate the enthusiasm of your first course. Begin with the interest you have now.

Revisit your course materials

Take out your manual and read a small section. Notice what feels familiar and where you would appreciate an explanation.

Rather than trying to cover everything in one evening, make a short list:

  • What do I remember clearly?

  • What would I like to practise again?

  • Which questions would I like to ask a teacher?

This gives your return some direction. It also makes it easier to ask for useful support.

If your training was a long time ago, or you are unsure about a technique, seek guidance instead of feeling you have to work it out alone.

Give yourself a realistic place to start

Choose a quiet moment to revisit the personal practice you were taught. Let it be manageable within your current routine.

Notice how you experience it now, without comparing it with your course weekend or anyone else’s experience. You can write down questions or reflections to discuss with your teacher.

Confidence can take time to rebuild. Familiarity grows as you return to learning and practice.

Does returning mean taking the next level?

Not necessarily. A break does not tell you which course to book.

You may want to reconnect with your existing learning first. You may feel interested in continuing your training but be unsure whether you are ready.

Before choosing, discuss your previous training, the level you completed and what you hope to learn next. That conversation can help you understand the course requirements and whether it is an appropriate step for you.

There is no need to rush into a higher level simply because time has passed.
