When You’re Always Looking After Others - Choosing Something for Yourself

2 min read

You know what everyone else likes. You remember the appointment, notice when something needs doing and think ahead so another person’s day runs more smoothly.

Then someone asks what you would like to do, and you need a moment to answer.

When looking after others takes up much of your attention, your own interests can become harder to hear. They are still there, even if they have been waiting quietly in the background.

Choosing something for yourself can begin with noticing what you would enjoy, without immediately turning it into something useful for everyone else.

Remember the person beyond the helping role

You may be a parent, partner, carer, colleague or the friend people always turn to. Those relationships matter, but they do not describe everything about you.

There may be things you would like to learn, places you would like to visit or experiences you have been putting off. Some might be familiar interests. Others may be completely new.

Try asking: what catches my attention when nobody needs anything from me?

You do not have to make a decision immediately. Give yourself time to notice the answer.

Let an interest belong to you

It is easy to choose something for yourself and then find a reason it will help someone else.

A course becomes another way to support the family. A hobby becomes a possible business before you have even tried it.

Those possibilities can come later. For now, you can let enjoyment and curiosity be enough.

If you feel drawn to learning Reiki, your first reason can be exploring your own practice. If sound healing interests you, you can begin by learning about it without deciding that you must offer sessions professionally.

You are allowed to learn before deciding what to do with the learning

Make your choice without adding another expectation

Something for yourself should be chosen with care for your actual circumstances. It does not need to become another standard you feel you must meet.

Before committing, consider:

  • Is this something I want, or something I think I should want?

  • Can I comfortably make space for it?

  • What practical support would help me attend?

Some caring responsibilities are difficult to step away from. Asking for cover, sharing a task or choosing a later date may be part of making room. You do not have to pretend those arrangements are easy.

A learning experience can be one option

My Reiki and sound healing courses in Drogheda, Co. Louth, offer an opportunity to spend time learning about a practice that interests you.

You can arrive as a learner, with your own questions and reasons for being there. There is no need to promise yourself a new career or a dramatic change.

If this feels like something you would enjoy exploring, browse the course options or contact me to ask a question.

The people you care for matter. Your interests deserve a place in your life too.
