When the Mind Won’t Let You Rest — Quieting Racing Thoughts at Bedtime

Updated: 3 days ago

Have you ever felt it?

That moment when your body is exhausted, your eyelids heavy — but the mind refuses to switch off. One thought leads to another. Your to-do list for tomorrow. That awkward thing you said last week. A sudden fear that you forgot something important.

It’s like your mind becomes a room with the lights on, buzzing with restless energy — even though your soul is begging for silence.

You’re not alone in this. So many of my clients come to me saying: “I’m so tired, but I can’t stop overthinking at night.” It’s one of the most common reasons we struggle to fall asleep — and the cost is heavy: anxiety, fatigue, frustration, a sense that your own thoughts are against you.

Why Racing Thoughts Happen

From an energetic perspective, racing thoughts often mean your energy is stuck in your head — spinning around your upper chakras — while the body feels disconnected and the heart feels unsupported.

Your nervous system stays in fight-or-flight mode, replaying worries instead of letting go.

No wonder sleep feels impossible.

A Simple Bedtime Hand Placement to Calm Your Mind

One of my favourite Reiki-inspired techniques is so gentle, yet so powerful — a simple hand placement that tells your mind it’s safe to rest.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Lie down comfortably.

  • Place one hand on your forehead, over your Third Eye chakra — the seat of intuition and mental clarity.

  • Rest your other hand gently over your heart center.

Close your eyes. Breathe in slowly through your nose, breathe out softly through your mouth. Feel the warmth of your hands connecting mind and heart.

With each exhale, imagine your thoughts melting like snowflakes on warm skin. There’s nothing to fix. Nothing to solve. Just you, your breath, and the quiet promise that you’re safe to let go.

Stay here for 5–10 minutes — or as long as you like. Many people fall asleep naturally this way. If your mind wanders, simply bring it back to the feeling of your hands.

Why This Works

This simple placement calms the busy mind while grounding you back into your body:

The hand on the forehead soothes the overactive mind, telling the brain it can rest.

The hand on the heart reminds your nervous system you are safe, loved and held.

Together, they create a bridge between head and heart — from thinking to feeling, from worrying to resting.

My Gentle Invitation

If you’ve never tried Reiki or energy work before, start here — tonight. Give yourself permission to pause, to soften, to breathe.

And if your nights feel heavy with restless thoughts, remember: you don’t have to carry it alone. This is exactly why I hold space for my clients — to help calm the mind, soften the heart, and invite the deep rest your soul is craving.

If you’d like to experience this deeper — through a Reiki session or a sound healing ritual — reach out to me. Sometimes a gentle touch and an open heart are all it takes to quiet the noise inside.
